Entries are now open for the 2011 Mary Towneley Loop challenge. The annual challenge event takes in the 47 mile bridleway loop around Rossendale, Calderdale and Rochdale. With 6300ft of climbing and a variety of surfaces and very little road makes this a genuinely big day out in the saddle. Starting at 9am on Sunday the 18th of September from Fearns school in Stacksteads the challenge takes in the full loop with the mountain rescue team providing support and food at a number of checkpoints as well as returning those suffering from mechanicals and blown legs back to base.
Top riders will knock the course off in just over 4 hours in good conditions. Around the 7 hour mark is consider good for mere mortals. Don't under estimate the challenge but it's well worth the effort. You could of course do it unsupported with your mates but then you'd have to open all the gates yourselves and that's a lot of gates. You'll start off racing but by the time you get to Callis Bridge which is roughly half way around thoughts start to turn to just finishing in one piece. This is the point the camaraderie kicks in.
Bookings are now being taken with a reduced entry fee of £ 15 or you can enter on the day for £ 20. All proceeds go to the Mountain Rescue Team who are currently raising funds for a new base.
